A salon workplace inspection checklist is essential to ensure a safer workplace. Use this checklist to make sure you are following all the proper health protocols for your workers.

Emergency telephone numbers are posted where they can be found quickly if needed
Clear signs marking exits from the building
The employer’s Summary of Occupational Injuries and Illness (Cal/OSHA Log 300) is posted
A written list of proper, safe work practices for all tasks done in the shop either are posted or circulated to employees
The shop have a fire prevention plan
The shop have a plan to fight fires and to evacuate in an emergency
Everyone understands these plans
Fire drills
All exits kept free of obstructions
There are enough exits to permit everyone to escape promptly
There are enough fire extinguishers in convenient locations
There is the correct fire extinguishers available for the types of materials that could catch on fire
Employees are trained in the use of fire extinguishers
Flammable and combustible chemicals are kept away from flames, sparks, and hot objects
Smoking is prohibited around flammable and combustible chemicals
There are enough outlets for all the electrical equipment, so the system isn’t overloaded
The workplace is kept clean and orderly
Floors and work surfaces are kept clean and dry
Spilled liquids are cleaned up immediately
Hand washing stations are available
There is enough space to work, the work area isn't small and/or cramped
The indoor temperature is comfortable
There is adequate lighting
Electrical appliances, such as stationary hair dryers, are grounded to prevent shocks
Electrical equipment and cords are kept in good condition so they won’t cause a shock or fire
Hot or sharp objects are kept out of the way so people won’t accidentally touch them
The shop is free of tripping hazards, like stools, equipment, cords, or wires
The shop is free of earthquake hazards, like shelves or cabinets that could fall over
There is enough fresh air in the workplace
There is a ventilation system
There is a vented table used for manicures
All ventilation systems are working
The ventilation systems have been inspected in the past year
Repairs on the ventilation systems are done promptly
There is a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) readily available for each chemical product used in the shop
There is an employee training program on chemical hazards
The air in the shop has been tested for chemicals
Chemicals are stored and mixed away from eating areas
Chemicals are mixed in an area separate from the main work area
Chemical bottles and containers are closed securely when not in use
Chemical containers are kept out of the way so people won’t accidentally knock them over
Chemicals are stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place
Incompatible chemicals are stored away from each other
Chemicals are disposed of properly (for most chemicals, not down the drain)
People avoid eating and drinking around chemicals
Safety glasses are provided to protect eyes from nail clippings
Splash goggles are available to protect eyes during chemical mixing
There are eye wash stations in case chemicals get in to someone’s eyes
Dust masks are available to manicurists, so they won’t breathe dust when filing nails
Surgical masks are available to offer to clients who are coughing
Protective gloves are available to anyone who handles chemicals
Protective gloves are available to use to avoid exposure to a communicable disease
Aprons and long-sleeve lab coats are available to protect people’s clothing and arms from chemicals
There are enough well-stocked first aids kits in the shop or salon
Workers know CPR
Cushioned mats are available for licensees to stand on while working on clients
Client chairs are adjustable so workers have easy access to the client
The shop has a good selection of shears and combs in different sizes so they “fit” each worker
All the shears are kept sharp
Portable carts are available so workers can keep their tools with them and avoid reaching?
Stools and rolling seats are available, so licensees can sit while they work
Workers have been trained in proper blending, reaching, and lifting techniques
